Steven Spielberg is set to direct a biopic of the life of Moses, which will portray the biblical leader in a gritty style described as a mix of Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan, reports Deadline.

Tentatively titled Gods and Kings, the film will show the Jewish hero as the ultimate, invincible warrior. “[It's] a Braveheart-ish version of the Moses story,” a source close to the project told Deadline. “Him coming down the river, being adopted, leaving his home, forming an army, and getting the Ten Commandments. There have been glossy versions of the Moses story but this would be a real warrior story.”

Spielberg has experienced a relatively disappointing awards season so far. His epic first world war film War Horse picked up a best picture nomination for the Oscars on Tuesday but was shut out of the other major categories, while animated adventure Tintin managed only one nod, for best music. The director is said to be looking for a “big film” to shoot next, and Gods and Kings has the right credentials.

Jean-Pierre Gibrat is a French comic artist and scriptwriter.

Born on the 14th of April 1954 in Paris, France. His first complete stories were published in the French magazine Pilote. With Jackie Berroyer, he took on le petit Goudard in 1978, a series which he continued in the same year in Charlie Mensuel, then in Fluide Glacial in 1980. During this time, some of his artwork was also published in the press : l’Evénement du jeudi, le Nouvel Obs, Sciences et Avenir and he also produced work for Okapi and Je bouquine. In late 1982, he pencilled La Parisienne in Pilote, again on a script by Berroyer. In 1985, on Saval’s texts, Gibrat drew, in Télé Poche, l’Empire sous la mer, an adventure starring the canine character Zaza, created by Dany Saval and Michel Drucker.

In October 1997, the graphic novel Le sursis was released, followed by volume 2 in September 1999, Le vol du Corbeau in 2002 and its second volume in 2005; all of which were published by Dupuis.

The major film studios and music labels are back on the move against those that they believe are infringing copyrighted material, at least that’s the front story. To them, it’s simply about money (see the “Its money that I love” by Randy Newman post prior to this one for full details…), not film, music or art. Instead of finding a twenty-first century solution to the issue, they’re teaming up once again with the Federal government, whose goals may not be so transparent. Considering the awakening of the public and continuing failure of the mainstream media to program the uninitiated, I theorize that “its” main interest is in curtailing free speech on the Internet.

Neither issue is of primary concern to me in this post. Copyright law and the Fair Use Doctrine already exist and the courts can easily adjudicate disputes. Free Speech is cherished here in America so it won’t be abridged without cost.

But an unintended, possibly intended side effect of these corporate governmental actions (i.e. SOPA et al) might severely impact the independence of Independent Media. This must not be tolerated.

Film studios and music labels are businesses. And just like any other business, they succeed or fail with your support or lack there of. It’s just that simple. The boycott has been used successfully time and time again. “But my movies, my music?” you say. Unlike the past when these companies dominated the entertainment landscape, there are many, many, did I say many, alternatives.

Independent filmmakers, musicians, in fact innovative creators of all kinds of art and media are emerging all the time. They’re building websites and portfolios of exceptional, if not superior work, when compared to the predictable rehash of the majors. The Internet is the Independent’s distribution channel. What is Fair Use?

The Fair Use Doctrine is one of the most important limitations on the exclusive rights of the copyright holder. It allows that copyright can be infringed because strict application of the law impedes the production and dissemination of works to the public. The Fair Use Doctrine was added as Section 107 of The Copyright Act of 1976 and was based on a history of judicial decisions that recognized that unauthorized infringements of copyright were “fair uses.

Sec. 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include -

1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

Fair Use should be actively exercised and considered on a case-by-case basis by weighing the four factors of fair use.

Artists before and after Michelangelo always depicted the Virgin with the dead Christ in her arms as grief stricken, almost on the verge of desperation. As she holds Jesus’ lifeless body on her lap, the Virgin’s face emanates sweetness, serenity and a majestic acceptance of this immense sorrow, combined with her faith in the Redeemer. It seems almost as if Jesus is about to reawaken from a tranquil sleep and that after so much suffering and thorns, the rose of resurrection is about to bloom. As we contemplate the Pieta which conveys peace and tranquility, we can feel that the great sufferings of life and its pain can be mitigated.

Here, many Christians recall the price of their redemption and pray in silence. The words may be those of the “Salve Regina” or “Sub tuum presidium” or another prayer. After Peter’s Tomb, the Pieta Chapel is the most frequently visited and silent place in the entire basilica.

It is said that Michelangelo had been criticized for having portrayed the Virgin Mary as too young since she actually must have been around 45-50 years old when Jesus died. He answered that he did so deliberately because the effects of time could not mar the virginal features of this, the most blessed of women. He also said that he was thinking of his own mother’s face, he was only five when she died: the mother’s face is a symbol of eternal youth.
